SENDA requires schools to produce Accessibility Plans every three years in order to combat discrimination and increase access to all aspects of school life for pupils with disabilities. This also includes school clubs and trips. This duty is now contained in the Equality Act 2010, and as from 1st SEPTEMBER 2012, all Schools must comply.
Accessibility plans must contain strategies for:
- Increasing the extent to which disabled pupils can participate in the curriculum
- Improving the physical environment of the school so that disabled pupils can take advantage of education
- Improving the delivery to disabled pupils of information that is accessible to pupils who are not disabled
Schools should identify short, medium and long-term aims in developing their plans over the three-year planning period.
