What is required?

The purpose of an Access Audit is to establish how well your school performs in relation to access and ease of use. Your access audit is your first ‘reasonable’ step, which needs to be taken. Changes you may need to implement could range from adapting parking facilities to signage, and perhaps installing hearing induction loops.

Access Audit

EA Audits will visit your school and perform a full Access Audit - an assessment of your school building in order to benchmark it’s accessibility to disabled people. Schools are not required to make physical alterations to the fabric of their building, but there is a duty to make reasonable steps to address physical features.

We will then assess what is reasonable for you to do as is required by the Equality Act 2010. This comes in the form of an Accessibility Plan (below).

Accessibilty Plan

SENDA requires schools to produce Accessibility Plans every three years in order to combat discrimination and increase access to all aspects of school life for pupils with disabilities. This also includes school clubs and trips. This duty is now contained in the Equality Act 2010, and as from 1st SEPTEMBER 2012, all Schools must comply.

Accessibility plans must contain strategies for:

  • Increasing the extent to which disabled pupils can participate in the curriculum
  • Improving the physical environment of the school so that disabled pupils can take advantage of education
  • Improving the delivery to disabled pupils of information that is accessible to pupils who are not disabled

Schools should identify short, medium and long-term aims in developing their plans over the three-year planning period.

SEN Plan

Based on the Accessibility Plan, the SEN Policy details how your school can do its best to ensure that the necessary provision is made for any pupil who has special educational needs and those needs are made known to all who are likely to teach them.

EA Audits will write a detailed and bespoke SEN policy for your school. We will liaise with your SENCo to establish the present needs of your pupils and the resources you have available.
